Let’s be clear up front:
Both cigars and cigarettes contain tobacco, and both come with health risks.
That’s not up for debate.
But in the shop, people ask me all the time:
“Aren’t cigars just like cigarettes?”
“Is it basically the same thing?”
No — it’s not the same thing.
Here’s how they’re different, from someone who smokes cigars daily and deals with real smokers every day.
“I’ve got plenty of friends who smoke cigarettes, and others who enjoy both — cigars and cigarettes. This isn’t about judgment. It’s just about understanding the difference. Respect goes both ways, and we all have our moments and preferences.”
Cigars Are Not Inhaled (Typically)
Cigarette smokers inhale the smoke directly into the lungs — dozens of times a day.
Cigar smokers usually do not inhale.
The smoke stays in the mouth, where you taste it — not in the chest.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
“Most cigar smokers do not inhale the smoke.”
(CDC.gov, Tobacco Facts, 2022)
This doesn’t make cigars “safe” — but the way they’re smoked is different.

Cigarette Smokers Smoke Daily — Cigar Smokers Usually Don’t
To further enhance your shopping experience, we’ll share tips oCigarettes are designed for daily, repeated use — often a pack a day.
That’s hundreds of puffs, every single day.
Cigars are usually smoked:
- occasionally
- slowly
- one at a time
- during intentional moments
Most of our customers smoke once a week or less.
The frequency is very different.
Cigarettes Burn Fast — Cigars Burn Slow
Cigarettes last 5–7 minutes.
They burn fast, produce hot smoke, and require constant puffing.
Cigars are meant to be slow — 30 to 90 minutes depending on the size.
The tobacco is aged longer, and the burn is cooler.
You’re not supposed to rush a cigar.
Cigars Are Whole Leaf — Not Chopped & Treated
Cigarettes are made from chopped tobacco, additives, chemicals, and reconstituted sheets.
Cigars are made from whole tobacco leaves — long filler, hand-rolled.
No filters. No paper. No synthetic wrap.
It’s leaf, binder, wrapper — that’s it.
This is why cigars:
- burn differently
- draw differently
- and require different storage (humidified)
Cigars Are a Taste Product — Not a Habit Product
Most cigarette smokers light up because their body asks for it.
It’s part of a daily habit loop.
Most cigar smokers do it because of taste, occasion, or ritual — not addiction.
That doesn’t mean cigars are harmless.
It means the why is different.
What the Medical Sources Say
According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, FDA, and CDC, cigars:
- Still contain nicotine
- Still produce secondhand smoke
- Still carry cancer risks
But they all agree on one point:
“Cigars and cigarettes are used differently and carry different patterns of exposure.”
(CDC.gov, FDA.gov, NCI.gov)
In short: cigars are not safe — but they’re not cigarettes, either.
So, Should You Be Aware? Yes. Should You Confuse Them? No.
If you’re going to smoke, at least understand what you’re doing.
Don’t assume cigars are “just like” cigarettes.
And don’t let people treat them like the same thing.
If you ever have questions, we’re real about it here.
